Support worker signs up for IT internship

A former journalist from Cambodia, Rithonyka Sambo juggled disability support work while studying Information Systems in Melbourne. Now she’s getting hands-on experience in her chosen field.

As a broadcast journalist in Cambodia, Rithonyka Sambo once hosted a talk show on disability.

Today, as a support worker also doing an IT internship with InLife, it feels like she’s come full circle.

“Back in Cambodia I was a presenter hosting a talk show about disability,” she said.

“I did a presentation about disability and the hardships they are going through in Cambodia.”

Rithonyka took time out for the workforce when her son was born and worked as a social media manager before deciding to come to Australia to do a Masters in Information Systems.

She wanted to study technology because of its potential to provide business solutions, but also found herself discussing and learning about disability again.

“When I was doing my Masters, my sister introduced me to disability support work because of the flexible schedule, because I’m studying and I have a son,” she said.

“And I found it was a nice job helping people to do what they want to do.”

As a support worker, Rithonyka attended an InLife workshop on the organisation's new communications and training platform Teamspace and it immediately sparked her interest in the IT side of the company.

“It’s an amazing product that I can’t find anywhere else, in other companies,” she said.

Rithonyka was offered an internship and is currently working two days a week with the InLife’s IT department while still working as a disability support worker three days a week

“I want to see how I can use IT to develop the business and disability industry, and how we can make it better.” she said

“I’m happy to grow with InLife.”
