Growing community at Harper Street

With the weather warming up, our clients at Harper Street had a great new goal for summer: turn part of the backyard into a community garden.

With the weather warming up, our clients at Harper Street had a great new goal for summer: turn part of the backyard into a community garden. This would create a shared space they and their neighbours could enjoy and add to over time.

Once the idea was set, Coordinator Val , Client Service Manager Lauren and Senior Community Engagement Manager Sophie helped kick things off. A bunch of InLife volunteers came along for the working bee, ready to dig, lift and bring the household’s goal to life.


There was plenty of prep. Moving dirt, laying out the foundations, sorting through tools.

Everyone jumped in wherever they were needed, keeping things relaxed and fun.

Mae, our resident gardening guru, teamed up with Tom, who looks to sketch out how the veggie garden should look.

Once the plan was set, we got to work building the beds, filling them up and shaping the space.

Then came the essential Bunnings run. We loaded the car with seedlings, herbs, mulch and a few plants that probably deserved their own seatbelt. With everything squeezed in, we headed back to start planting.

Mae guided the planting so everything landed in the right spot. Sun lovers together, shade lovers where they needed to be. Chilli, corn, tomatoes, basil, a bit of everything. By the end of the day the garden already had a spark of life.

It was a terrific day of everyone pitching in and helping our clients bring an idea to life. Stay tuned as the garden grows into a space the whole street can enjoy.
